Legislative Article by Terry Turner

Posted by admin on December 7, 2012

The following article by President Terry Turner in his President’s Comments section of the AFSA Team Tinker Newsletter, September 2012 issue has never been more applicable than right now considering the nation’s financial crisis and military programs in jeopardy as we know them today.  This article is repeated to simplify you contacting your elected officials with the best tool we’ve ever had:

“AFSA does an outstanding job representing its members’ interest on Capitol Hill.  But They cannot do it along.  Elected leaders like to hear from their constituents.  We have the best tool that we’ve ever had in the field to make this happen, CAPWIZ.  If you’ve never written a letter to your elected Congressional Leaders before because you didn’t know how or it was just too much trouble, CAPWIZ does it for you.  Go to and click on CAPWIZ down the left side of the opening page and insert your zip code.  It writes the letter for you to both US Senators and your US Representative on initiatives that AFSA is vigorously pursuing on our behalf.  You can even edit the letter to change some of the language or add personal comments.  When ready click on submit and sit back and wait for an answer.  You don’t even have to sign in to the website to use CAPWIZ. It’s so easy and you’re part of the solution.  If you do this, and I hope you will, please forward me a copy of the letter and answers so we can show our usage and involvement helping AFSA help us - AFSA 985 President”

CapWiz click here

Resource: "AFSA ON CALL":

AFSA CapWiz MegaVote – What’s Congress up to?Have you ever wondered how your elected officials were voting?  How about the total vote count for Senate or House on a particular Bill?  Well AFSA has enabled the answers to those questions to be delivered to your email address with just a couple clicks.

  • Go to the AFSA home page and click on CapWiz.
  • To the right of the CapWiz feature is a box to locate your elected officials via Zip code.
  • Next screen click on the photo of one and then click on the tab labeled “Bills.”  Then click on any of the listed bills.
  • Almost there; click on “Key Votes” and then you’ll see the MegaVote link.  Enter your info and you’ll start receiving information.

Hopefully along the way you will have noticed a number of features the CapWiz platform offers.  We can’t iterate enough how powerful a tool it is to communicate with Congress.  Remember, they work for you and like any other employee, in the absence of direction from their boss (you); they will do whatever they think is best.  Keep them on task.

International president visit

Posted by admin on August 15, 2008

Yesterday we as a chapter orchestrated a very successful visit by our International President Doc Mc Causlin. In less than 24 hours, we managed to have dinner with the exec council and command chiefs, visit FTAC, ALS, and SNCOPES, and conduct office calls with the commanders of the 72 ABW, 552 ACW, 76 MXW, and 3 CCG and their command chiefs/chief enlisted managers.  Our meeting was attended by 79, and Doc was able to speak to 123 about current legislation and the importance of contacting their elected representatives.

Chapter 985 is an exceptional organization and we should each be proud to be members. Each of you plays a big part of that, whether you attend meetings, take part in our Airman Activities, or if you just continue paying your dues each year. Everyone plays a valuable part, regardless.

Thank you again for becoming and remaining a member. Please contact me if your membership is about to expire or if you want to join again.

August 14 Meeting Reminder

Posted by admin on August 11, 2008

This Thursday is our general membership meeting in the Tinker Club at 1130.  For those planning to eat lunch, I ask you to arrive at 1100 because of a large number of events taking place in the club that day and the possibility of running out of food is greater. Our meeting will be held in the south end of the ballroom, attached to the dining room. This month we are extremely lucky and proud to have our international president John "Doc" Mc Causlin with us. Doc has had a huge role in the improvements we have seen to our benefits and quality of life over the last 3 years and this will be an excellent opportunity to find out more about how that process works.

Attached are the July general membership meeting minutes as well as the August executive council meeting minutes for your review. I will be asking for approval of these minutes during the short meeting we will have before President Mc Causlin takes the floor.

Please contact me with any questions about the meeting, the minutes, or any other AFSA issues including renewing or extending your membership, or becoming a member of the best AFSA chapter in the world!
